Gala Evening at the Marriott Grand Hotel (Moscow)

October 25, 2002 - 7:30 pm

The Russian National Orchestra, the Marriott Grand hotel, the Anglo-Russian charity Amur and the Russian edition of Good Housekeeping magazine will hold a special gala evening to support endangered animals and disabled children, so that both have a future - together.

The gala evening will take place on the second floor of the Marriott Grand Hotel, in its three conference rooms and it will highlight art created by children. Part of the works were received during an annual art competition held by the Russian edition of Good Housekeeping magazine and the Moscow Marriott Grand Hotel. This year's theme, "I love ...," evoked more than 1000 works from various regions of Russia, including Siberia, the Urals and the Far East, as well as the Baltic States (Estonia, Latvia), CIS countries and even Finland and Laos.

The rest of the children's art comes from the Russian National Orchestra's annual art contest, "How I See Music," which is part of the RNO's Magic of Music initiative. Designed to reach the hearts of children living in difficult, challenging circumstances, the Magic of Music brings the joy of creative self-expression into several Moscow orphanages and special facilities for the mentally and physically disabled. Part of the money raised during the evening will benefit this program.

Other funds will go toward conservation programs supported by Amur. They are aimed at saving the existing 400 Amur tigers and 40 Amur leopards living in the wilds of the Russian Far East. Amur, whose patron is Sir Roderic Lyne, Her Majesty's Ambassador to Russia, has been created to raise money and awareness for the conservation of Russian tigers and leopards. Amur is working with scientists and other organizations to develop various conservation activities, like habitat protection through the creation of reserves, stopping illegal hunting with anti-poaching teams, vital research, including radio-tracking of collared tigers, and more. Dr. Dale Miquelle will come to Moscow from Vladivostok specially for the event. Dr. Miquelle has lived in the Russian Far East for more than 10 years and has been involved in numerous conservation projects in the region. Another guest of honour will be Dr. Glyn Davis, the Director of Conservation at the Zoological Society of London.

Some 200 guests will take part in the evening's events, including a presentation by Dr Miquelle, an auction of several of the best paintings, and a chamber concert performed by soloists of the Russian National Orchestra. The concert will feature classical scores on animal-related themes. The paintings will be displayed on the walls, in the foyer and on easels for guests to choose items they like.

The Marriott Grand Hotel is located at 26, Tverskaya street.
